H3 Construction has recently concluded a spectacular structural concrete project at Energy Plaza in downtown Dallas. The project entailed a close partnership with water feature experts, Outside the Lines, and general contractor Brassfield & Gorrie. Together, we embarked on a mission to construct the critical infrastructure for a stunning tree and water feature.

Crafting the vision

Our journey began with meticulous planning and execution. Our seasoned commercial concrete crew started by crafting intricate formwork to create a remarkable structural concrete ring—a future haven for a magnificent tree. This impressive ring boasted a substantial twenty-foot diameter and a depth of three and a half feet. 

The ring was just the beginning of our contributions. H3 Construction skillfully engineered formwork for an array of three-and-a-half-foot walls. These served as a foundation for various steps and a basin thoughtfully designed to manage the water feature’s overflow. 

The final touch was creating abstract trenches etched into the foundation to host LED fixture lighting. This sophisticated lighting arrangement would transform the structural ring into a mesmerizing spectacle at night with captivating uplighting.

Concrete craftsmanship at Energy Plaza

Every project presents challenges, the foremost at Energy Plaza being the need to establish a structural concrete foundation above a suspended slab. H3 Construction Vice President Eloy Ortiz II delved into the complexities, revealing, “Our worksite was directly above a bustling parking garage, imposing strict weight capacity restrictions.” 

Undeterred, the H3 Construction commercial concrete crew ingeniously devised a solution. Instead of using trucks to deliver concrete to the site, our concrete experts used a 65-foot boom pump to ensure the concrete reached its intended destination.
