Six Flags Construction Required Advanced Concrete Expertise

When you’re riding your favorite roller coaster, take notice of the foundation supporting your fun. We are particularly proud of the highly technical concrete work accomplished during the Six Flags construction of The Riddler Revenge. 

Supporting a Supervillain

Added as part of the 2016 expansion to their Gotham City attraction, The Riddler Revenge is a popular addition joining Catwoman and the Joker in their attempt to conquer the city and defeat Batman. This large pendulum ride swings a rotating disk almost 150 feet in the air. 

When you are going close to 70 miles per hour and enjoying the thrill of taking on the Riddler, the foundation is likely not what’s on your mind, but it is one of the most necessary structural pieces of the ride. 

The forces of tension and compression put considerable stress on the ride structure. Addressing these forces is critical to supporting a ride like the Riddler Revenge. Compression is a downward force, balanced to prevent the ride structure, and anything below, from being crushed. Tension comes from the ride swinging back and forth, pulling the ride structure away from the ground. Balancing tension forces keeps the ride structure in place. Using reinforced concrete combines the high compression strength of concrete with the high tension strength of steel. 

To provide the highest level of safety and ride function, the H3 Construction expert concrete crew applied advanced technical knowledge and skill to create and implement a design to properly mitigate tension and compression forces by selecting the proper foundation elements. The Riddler Revenge foundation required over 50 piers topped by large footers using 60-inch anchor bolts.

Once the highly-detailed structural support system build was complete, the next step was to make it look like a supervillain. 

Six Flags construction aesthetics

No supervillain is ready to instill fear in the citizens of Gotham city without a strategic outfit. Traditionally gray, the team used green concrete stain and specialty-designed concrete stamping techniques to make the foundation and waiting areas look the part. 

In addition to creating a custom and highly detailed structure plus making it look good, the H3 Construction team worked to accomplish this task within a tight timeline. All Six Flags construction needed to be completed in time for the Riddler Revenge to be fully operational by the beginning of the Six Flags Over Texas season.
