H3 Construction recently finished commercial concrete for the Preston Road phase three improvement project.
Our Vice President, Cesar Ortiz II, recently sat down to discuss the project overview, challenges, and benefits of our in-house equipment to complete concrete work where Preston Road ties into Loop 12 in Dallas.
H3 Construction Returns to Preston Commons
H3 Construction Vice President Cesar Ortiz II reports, “This is the third time we mobilized to Preston Commons. It’s been an annual renewable contract where we work for a general contractor named CoDel, who works directly for the Preston Commons shopping center.”
This project proved difficult due to high vehicle traffic on Preston Road, high pedestrian traffic, and busy retail spaces.
“This entire shopping center has been a challenge to begin with because none of the stores want to deal with the financial impact of closing their entrances or exits or delivery systems, so we did demolition overnight,” says Ortiz. “We also provided engineered in-house traffic control and safety protocols and installed those traffic controls and safety protocols with pedestrian ingress and egress into the buildings. We do that at an elevated level so that when we come in to do the formwork, rebar, and grading underneath the pedestrian walkways into the buildings.”
Three-phase commercial concrete project
Completing the Preston Road custom concrete project took place in three phases. Each phase was integral in streamlining the timeline of this project.
- Demolition of existing concrete. The H3 Construction concrete crew demolished the old concrete structure and removed unneeded materials to create space for upgrades.
- Pour concrete parking and curb. The completion of phase 2 allowed the crew a flat piece of concrete to work off of to complete the pedestrian walkways.
- Create pedestrian walkways. The pedestrian walkways have in-bed paver systems, so what we had to do was pour paving as well as a paver bed, which is multiple levels, so when we’re shooting elevations, we have to make sure that we’re accounting for what will be a walking surface and what will be a subgrade for an installation of pavers which will then be the future walking surface.
“This project took us four months to do turn-key. We were able to handle the traffic control, the demolition, the material, the grading, and the concrete all in-house.”
