How GPR makes excavation projects easier, safer

At H3 Construction, we follow the latest trends and news in the construction industry and have noticed that ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is still as important as ever.

Electrical Contractor Magazine recently posted an article about different methods of underground utility construction, along with how and when they work best. Whether utilities are trenched in or buried using horizontal directional drilling to minimize surface disruption, future construction near those buried lines will rely upon accurate identification and marking.

GPR helps commercial concrete crews avoid costly damage

Sometimes, internet, electrical or plumbing supply lines are encased in concrete that must be sawed or drilled. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a technology used by the best concrete contractors to identify potential hazards and perform cutting or sawing projects more safely near underground utilities.

GPR is an invaluable tool for our team and can reduce the risk of an accident or injury, not to mention the costly repairs or replacements that can result from utility lines being damaged during demolition or construction.

We use GPR to easily identify underground pipes, cables, and metal work. The technology allows us to safely determine the depth and size of objects buried in concrete.

How does GPR work?

GPR technology works by sending out electromagnetic waves and measuring the return wave timing. This allows the system to obtain a clear image of any obstructions beneath the surface.

This type of radar technology is noninvasive and does not require our crews to break ground. This saves time and keeps projects on budget by eliminating the need for utility repairs, replacements, potential fines, and downtime.

Essential planning includes locating and protecting utilities

Once we’ve identified potential obstacles, our excavation, demolition, and construction crews can plan accordingly and adjust their equipment or technique to avoid any potential damage. Protecting underground utilities is necessary to ensure that essential services like electricity and water are not disrupted.
