Team member Eloy Ramirez recently shared some of the best practices we follow for every project to ensure construction safety.
PPE essentials
Construction site safety begins with the individual crew members.
“We implemented basic general practices. For example, face shields and helmets,” said Ramirez.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the first line of defense for construction workers. Helmets, face shields, and high-visibility vests are essential to protect against falling objects and increase visibility on busy job sites.
Footwear and visibility
“We require our crews to wear high visibility safety vests on each site,” Ramirez shared.
Wearing appropriate footwear and high-visibility vests ensures workers are easily spotted, especially in excavation, demolition, or concrete jobs with large equipment moving around. Large and small equipment also means lots of potentially hearing-damaging noise.
Hearing protection
“Most of our equipment generates a lot of sound,” Ramirez explained. “From concrete saws and drills to large trucks and other equipment, it makes for a noisy project site.”
Noise pollution on construction sites can be detrimental to workers’ hearing. Ear protection is crucial, especially when using loud equipment like flat saws for concrete cutting.
Scheduling considerations
Often, construction safety goes beyond the crews to those around the site. The construction crew must think of surrounding areas and plan accordingly.
Intentional scheduling can minimize disruptions caused by noisy equipment. Adjusting work hours to reduce high-decibel activities during business hours benefits the customer and their employees.
Machine safety
Safety is not just about personal protective equipment but also the machines themselves.
“The machines we have, from hand-held to walk-behind equipment, have shields over the blades,” Ramirez explained when asked about safety mechanisms on the sharp cutting equipment.
Ensuring equipment has safety features like blade shields and clutches can prevent accidents and injuries.
Construction safety adapts to new technology
One upgrade H3 Construction crews will be getting soon is new hard hats.
“Recently, we found out some job sites are moving from the standard hard hats we’ve seen for years to the type two hard hats like the climbing hats,” Ramirez said. The new hard hats feature a more secure attachment system to keep them in place and protect the wearer.

Heat and exhaustion management
Apart from machinery-related safety, it’s crucial to address environmental factors.
“A big challenge in Texas, especially during the summer, is simply the heat,” Ramirez said, indicating the record-breaking streak of 100-degree days last summer. Heat management was crucial to crew safety.
Providing hydration resources and encouraging regular breaks during hot weather helps combat heat-related illnesses and exhaustion.
Construction safety prioritizes crew wellbeing
The welfare of the crew should always be a top priority. Regular check-ins, training, and open communication channels can foster a culture of safety where workers feel valued and supported.
“We prioritize the crews themselves and believe every person’s safety is essential to building a team we’re proud of,” Ramirez explained.
